In a previous article, we discussed the costs of hiring interpreters, which include interpreter fees, Interpretation equipment fees, and interpreter’s accommodation and travel expenses (including food in some cases). This may not be a problem if you are organizing an event in Bangkok and can engage interpretation or translation services in Bangkok. However, if your avenue and where your interpreters live are several provinces apart, travel and accommodation expenses will skyrocket.
This article will introduce another alternative for language interpretation that can save customers money and time for interpreters. It is called “remote simultaneous interpretation” or RSI, for short. The advantages of this type of interpretation are as follows:
1. No need to worry about interpreter’s accommodation and travel expenses
With this new way of working, you can work with interpreters around the world without having to pay for expensive airfare or accommodation.
2. More options for rare language pairs
Suppose you are organizing a conference in Thailand that requires a Russian-Khmer interpreter. It will be very difficult to find an interpreter because there are few such interpreters in Thailand due to lack of job opportunities. However, with RSI, we can work with interpreters in Cambodia or Russia.
3. Lower interpretation equipment costs
In general, RSI interpretation equipment is cheaper than traditional interpretation equipment.
4. Save time
Interpreters do not need to travel to the venue to work. Additionally, customers have more options for interpreters, without to worry about whether or not it is difficult to find an interpreter in the area.
Even though RSI has many advantages, it also has limitations. Please consider the following disadvantages of RSI and choose the interpretation type that best suits your needs.
1. Technical problems
There might be internet connection issues that disrupt the connection between the interpreter and the venue, or problems with RSI software itself. These issues become even harder to solve if the interpreter isn’t proficient in using the software.
2. Quality concerns
Software and internet connection problems can affect the audio and video quality, making it difficult for the interpreter to convey the message accurately.
3. Confidentiality
If the client doesn’t provide a workspace for the interpreter, there is no guarantee that the interpreter’s chosen workspace is suitable for keeping information confidential. This becomes a concern, especially if the event requires confidentiality.
4. Software training needed
Interpreters might not be familiar with RSI software like Interprefy. Clients may need to help train them if they want to use the service of a trusted interpreter who lacks experience with this software. This can limit the pool of available interpreters.
RSI is a good alternative for interpretation when you are organizing an event in a remote location or when you need to save money. However, RSI also has its own limitations. You should consider the advantages and disadvantages of RSI carefully before deciding to use it.
